Workshop Focus: Functional Anatomy of Movement

Would you like to understand exercise and movement from a deeper perspective?

Would you like to approach cueing and exercise prescription with even more clarity?

This series of workshops will explore the connection between anatomy and movement in ways that are accessible, applicable and empowering.

We will constantly refer back to how and why.

For example - Why does the foot pronate and how does it return to supination? How are the breath and spine connected? Why should I address someone's shoulder for a knee problem? Why is everyone talking about the Psoas? Where is it and what does it do? And, most importantly, how does the body work together as an interrelated unit? All of these questions and more (many more!) will be answered over the five workshops.

Whether you have learned traditional anatomy or not studied anatomy at all, this series is for you. The true function of each anatomical area is broken down with clarity and with practical examples, combining theory with real-life movement.

Each workshop will be supported by preliminary reading to help you get prepared and post exploratory exercises to help you consolidate the information learned. James Earls (author of 'Born to Walk' and co-author of 'Fascial Release for Structural Balance') will be available during the series for questions and feedback to help clarify any hazy areas in your understanding of how the body moves. Each workshop will include postural analysis, movement explorations, touch cueing skills, plus a healthy, tasty lunch!

Feet and Function

The feet are the body's first points of interaction with the ground. As such, feet have to deal with forces coming down from the body and coming back into them from the ground-all whilst encased in various strange and restrictions footwear.

During this interaction to the form and function of the feet, we will look at the overall anatomony of the foot with an introduction to the bones, muscles and tendons- not with the usual textbook stories, but in context of the roles they all play together in real-life movement. We will explore the relationships between the feet and the rest of the body and why they should be one of the fist areas to check when clients present with aches and pains-what should you feet do when you reach, lunge or turn? How does your left foot connect to your right arm?

By the end of the day you will know exactly what to look for in your client and how to assess the foot's adaptability.

The day will be interactive, explorative and fun- be prepared to explore new areas, new strategies and new ideas.

Hubertus Joseph Pilates- the Biography

Open to everyone
Javier will discuss his biography of Joseph Pilates.
This is the definitive book on Joseph Pilates.
The is the first ever published biography of Hubertus Joseph Pilates. Instead of regurgitating the myths surrounding the creator of Contrology, the authors spend years investigating and researching. They come up with a rather different result and a fresh new look into the man and his work. He becomes again human and his work even more a reflection of who he was. The creator of such a popular workout deserves no less: A serious and calm look at his life beyond mythology and hearsay.
